About 5 Centimeters Per Second
Makoto Shinkai made this film back in 2007 — before Your Name, before Weathering with You, before he became the biggest name in anime film. It's a quieter, sadder work than his later blockbusters, told in three short chapters that follow a young man named Takaki as distance and time slowly pull him away from someone he loves. There are no body-swapping mechanics or weather-controlling powers here. Just two people and the growing space between them.
The animation is stunning even by today's standards. Shinkai's trademark — making light and weather feel like characters in themselves — is already fully formed here. Cherry blossoms, falling snow, train windows at dusk. Every frame is a painting, and the beauty of the visuals makes the melancholy hit harder.
It's only about an hour long, which works in its favor. The film says what it needs to say without overstaying. Some people find the ending frustrating. Others find it honest. Either way, you'll think about it after.

Is It Worth Watching?
If you're a Shinkai fan, this is essential — it's where his style crystallized. If you're new to his work, start with Your Name and come back to this one after. It's a mood piece more than a narrative, and it rewards you for sitting with its sadness rather than fighting it. Best watched late at night with your phone turned off.
